The literary oeuvre of Honoré de Balzac is of importance in the world of opera for two reasons: first, his novels feature precise descriptions of visits to the opera and reviews of specific works; and secondly, several of his stories have been turned into operas, including Massimilla Doni, for which Armin Rüeger wrote the libretto.
